For example, proposals attempt to gain approval for projects, solve community problems, or improve existing conditions. Proposals can also be used to persuade the reader to buy or do something.

Both analysis and argument construction are central to effective proposals. First, writers must carefully analyze a problem or needits manifestations, its causes, its impactin order to suggest an appropriate solution to solve the problem or meet the need. Then they must make an argument that does several things: define the problem or need and defend their articulation of it; claim that a particular solution will resolve the problem or meet the need; and provide evidence for the feasibility of that solution.

To sum up: A proposal is a suggested solution to an identified problem or need. It is persuasive in that its goal is to encourage the reader to take a particular action; it is expository in that it explains both problem and solution in some detail.
