For this conceptual project, you will be creating two parts: two tessellations and a frieze pattern. For part 1, you will create two tessellated designs. For your tessellated designs, you may begin with either a square, rectangle, parallelogram, rhombus or a triangle. There are several types of tessellated designs, including: 1. Translation tessellation (easy to medium difficulty) 2. Glide translation tessellation (difficult) 3. Rotation tessellation (difficult) For the first design, choose either an easy or medium difficulty translation tessellation to create. For the second design, choose either a glide translation or rotation tessellation to create. You can start by viewing more information on the types of tessellations. There are also many online resources to help with your research on what the different types of tessellations are and how to create them. This project is to be done by hand. Computer generated tessellations will not be accepted. Your completed design must incorporate at least three different colors, and you can decorate your tessellation however you want. This is your opportunity to be creative! You can cut each shape out of colored paper and glue down on the grid, or use colored pencils, pens, markers, crayons, etc. Part of your grade depends on the creativity and complexity of your design. Look online for inspiration and have fun with the project. The type of transformation must be identified for both pieces. You may take pictures or scan your work for submission. Please submit both images of your tessellations in one file for upload. Refer to the rubric for this assignment to ensure you are meeting all the requirements of this project, and name your file according to the instructions. The requirements again for this part of the conceptual project are: 1. Create either an easy or medium level difficulty slide translation tessellation. 2. Create either a rotation or glide translation tessellation. 3. Each design must incorporate at least three different colors. 4. Each tessellated design must have at least 16 repeated images in an overall square or rectangle design (your design cannot be a straight line). 5. You must describe the transformations used in each tessellated design using units, including direction and degree of rotation. 6. You may add to your design with pen work, designs, shading, details, etc. Be creative! For the second part of this conceptual project, you will create an original frieze design, based upon one of the seven groups described in this lesson. You may either do your design by hand or computer generate the design. You can also use any images for your frieze, provided they are appropriate for class. For this assignment, you will need to provide the transformation or series of transformations that your frieze exhibits. Your pattern must have a minimum of eight repeated designs and can be created by hand or by using a computer. You are free to use whatever program you would like.
