Starting a social enterprise is no easy task; much thought, consideration, planning and research are involved. Your awareness of how to do this and practicing the steps in developing a Social Enterprise are useful skills for the contemporary community services professional. This assignment will help you apply some of the theories, examples, and activities we have explored in class.

Where do I start?

$1.$ For this assignment, you are working individually. Based on your interests and work and study experience, you must come up with an example of a social enterprise that you think would make a difference regarding an issue you care about $($e$.$g$.$ climate justice, the rights of children, housing, education, etc.$).$

$2.$ To get some inspiration, you may complete a search for different social enterprises that are attempting to address your chosen issue.

Some popular examples of social enterprises include consultant work $($people paying you and your colleagues money to teach or share information about your area of expertise; the selling of fair trade goods; employing people who are facing barriers in the workplace, like people living with disabilities, people living with mental illness; newcomers to Canada; people who have faced domestic violence, or other groups who have experience marginalization because of bias; Selling goods that promote a cause; an activity that addresses a concern $($e$.$g$.$ Hope Blooms in Halifax $-$ food security, OR River Clean Up $-$ environmental protection$)$; Starting a cooperative workspace.

$3.$ Once you have developed an idea, you will use the attached Word document that includes three Cs $-$ Community, Customers, and Competitors$-$ and an executive summary. PLEASE USE THIS DOCUMENT TO COMPLETE YOUR ASSIGNMENT. YOU WILL DOWNLOAD THE FORM AND FILL IT OUT. PLEASE DO NOT FORGET TO INCLUDE YOUR REFERENCES AT THE END OF THE DOCUMENT. ONCE IT IS COMPLETED, YOU WILL UPLOAD IT TO THE ASSIGNMENT FOLDER ON THE DUE DATE $($WEEK$11)$

$4.$ For your research, you may gather information using Industry Tools like Industry Canada, Statistics Canada, or a general search for costs and information related to your business of choice. We will spend some time in class on week $10$ using some of these research tools, but please become familiar with the tools in advance of our class discussion and activity.

What do I need to submit?

You must submit your Three C$\text{'}$s document and record yourself on Zoom summarising your Social Enterprise and your findings. To record yourself on Zoom, use your student Zoom account and record to the cloud. When your recording is complete, you will receive a notification in your email with a link to the recording. You will then provide your professor with the link in the submission folder.
