For this paper assignment you are to write a brief impartial philosophical/ethical defense for both sides of a given topic. You must select ONLY ONE of the following topics to write upon. 1st Topic (Correlating to Chapter 2) The practice of 'Bluffing' is something that is often practiced in the realm of business. Yet there is widespread disagreement on whether or not this practice is ethical or not with two opposing sides. Thus, you are presented with a moral issue/dilemma in the business realm-----[Side A: Bluffing in business is ethical; Side B: Bluffing in business is not ethical] For this topic you are to discuss the ethical dimensions that surround this issue/dilemma and philosophically/ethically defend both sides of the topic fairly. 2nd Topic (Correlating to Chapter 5) Imagine that you came upon a very large sum of money. With this newfound fortune, you are confronted with a moral issue/dilemma in the business realm----[Side A: Take and allocate this money for yourself and/or your family members and close friends, all of whom are living rather comfortable lives and none of whom are in any dire financial position or Side B: Donate the money to a nearby shelter for the homeless that is about to close due to insufficient funds.] For this topic you are to discuss the ethical dimensions that surround this issue/dilemma and philosophically/ethically defend both sides of the topic fairly. --> In this paper, you must answer in favor of each side in the topic you have chosen. That is, you must impartially argue for both sides of the issue giving equal weight to both of these sides [A) & B)] . Your paper will NOT conclude in favor of one side or another. The task in your paper is to give as compelling a defense of each side, regardless of your personal convictions on the matter. The purpose is to force you to see the kind of philosophical defense possible on each side of an issue. You will see this because you will be responsible for developing each side to equal strength. That is, part of your evaluation will depend upon your ability to develop both sides equally well. To accomplish this, YOU MUST INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING COMPONENTS: 1]---First, depending on which topic you choose [1st Topic or 2nd Topic ] speak a little about the issue/dilemma that you have chosen by providing some background information and explain/define any necessary terms and notions involved with this issue/dilemma. {This part of the paper, i.e. the set-up portion, is to consume no more than a page and a half of writing. If it goes beyond a page and a half of writing, there will be a significant grade deduction as a result.} 2]---Second, provide a philosophical/ethical defense for Side A of the issue 3]----Third, provide a philosophical/ethical defense for Side B of the issue ----> For Components 2 & 3] when defending each side you must to do the following TWO things: A} You must apply at least one of the moral theories studied earlier in the course from Unit 1. Failure to apply a moral theory for each side from Unit 1 will result in a significant grade deduction. Now this requires that you first explain the moral theory you'll use for each side when first introducing it. In this paper you are attempting to demonstrate your mastery of the moral theory (after all, this is a class in moral theory within the realm of business), so explain the theory first, then carefully and explicitly apply that theory to your chosen issue Of these theories, select from only the following moral theories: Consequentialism/Utilitarianism; Kants deontology/ Kantianism; Virtue ethics **NOTE--You do not need to use all of these theories, but you must use at least one and you may not use any others. IN FACT IT IS HIGHLY ENCOURAGED THAT YOU ONLY APPLY ONE OF THESE THREE MORAL THEORIES ABOVE FOR THE DEFENSE OF EACH SIDE. SO DON'T HAVE TWO MORAL THEORIES LOCATED WITHIN THE DEFENSE OF ONE SIDE. HAVE ONE MORAL THEORY FOR THE DEFENSE OF SIDE A & ANOTHER MORAL THEORY FOR THE DEFENSE OF SIDE B! & **You may use one philosophical theory for one side of the issue and a different philosophical theory for the other side, if you think this will work better. For example, you may use consequentialism/utilitarianism to argue for Side A, while using virtue ethics in defending Side B. You may, of course, use just one theory, i.e. consequentialism/utilitarianism, to argue for both sides. {If you choose only one moral theory, you don't need to explain the theory again for Side B.} In any case, you will also be evaluated in part for the accuracy with which you explain your chosen moral theories as well as the skill with which you apply them to the topics.**------B) You must apply at least one Correlative Reading from our text for the defense of each side that is located within the Chapter with which the topic is correlated. So there will be at least one Reading used in the defense of Side A and a Contrasting Reading used in the defense of Side B. And the moral theories from Unit 1 don't count as a reading. And by "apply a reading" we mean you must reference and/or quote a reading within each defense for each side. I would not quote the author of the reading more than three times within each defense of each side but you must do it at least once. Failure to apply a reading from our chapter in addition to a moral theory from Unit 1 will result in a significant grade deduction. So if you choose the 1st Topic, you have to apply one of the three moral theories from Unit 1 and at least one Reading from Chapter 2 that relates to the topic. And if you choose the 2nd Topic, you have to apply one of the three moral theories from Unit 1 and at least one Reading from Chapter 5. THE PAGE LIMIT FOR THIS PAPER AGAIN IS 5-6 PAGES. THAT MEANS, YOU MUST WRITE 5 FULL PAGES OF WRITING. I WON'T PENALIZE FOR GOING OVER BUT I WILL PENALIZE FOR GOING UNDER! (Title page and/or Bibliography dont count as a page of writing) PAGE LIMIT REQUIREMENTS--> 5-6 PAGES; AT MINIMUM 5 FULL PAGES OF WRITING WITH NO MORE THAN ONE INCH MARGINS ON ALL SIDES (MY RECOMMENDATION-LEAVE IT AT 1" MARGINS-DON'T GO ABOVE 1)--I WILL CHECK! AND YOU MUST GIVE A PROPER CITATION FOR ALL SOURCES USED--INCLUDING THE SOURCES FROM OUR TEXTBOOK! OUTLINE TO FOLLOW: I. Introduction in which you provide a thesis statement that includes the name of the topic & name of the theory (or theories) used to analyze the topic. II. A brief informational rundown of the topic that provides some facts, figures, definitions of terms and notions and other pertinent background information that is at max one and a half pages. III. Philosophical/Ethical defense of Side A using one of the Moral theories from Unit 1 and a Reading from either Chapter 2 (1st Topic) or Chapter 5 (2nd Topic)-Depending on what Topic you select. IV. Philosophical analysis of Side B using one of the Moral theories from Unit 1 and a Contrasting Reading from either Chapter 2 (1st Topic) or Chapter 5 (2nd Topic)-Depending on what Topic you select. {The theory used here can be different or the same as the theory used in III} V. A proper conclusion that wraps up steps II-IV. --> TWO MAJOR INSTRUCTIONS: 1) WHEN YOU SAVE YOUR PAPER MAKE SURE THAT IT IS: A) FIRST IN A 97-04 WORD .DOC FORMAT (NOT DOC X); B) LABEL YOURPAPER PROPERLY-- LAST NAME, FIRST NAME; COURSE NUMBER (SECTION); SEMESTER & C) MAKE SURE THAT IT IS IN TIMES NEW ROMAN FONT 2) WHEN QUOTINGOUR TEXTBOOK OR ANY OTHER SOURCE, INCLUDE THE PAGE NUMBER WHERE THEQUOTE AND/OR IDEA IS FOUND, FOR EXAMPLE--SMITH (95). REMINDER: Look to the Writing Tips Folder within the Assignment Tab for additional tips on how to write a philosophy paper. Topics: Write on only one of the topics given for each paper. Do not stray from the topic, and be sure to address all elements or questions in the topic (this is especially true when one of the questions asks you to explain why you hold a view). Citation: Be sure to fully cite sources for claims made by others. YOU MUST PROPERLY ALL CITATIONS AND REFERENCES, INLCUDING THOSE FROM OUR TEXTBOOK! Do not plagiarize. When citing please be sure to include the author, article title, and date (if given) of any source you used from it. Note that simply giving the above information at the end of your paper (such as in a Works Cited or Bibliography) is NOT sufficient for preventing plagiarism. Within the body of your paper you must indicate the original author of any ideas, concepts, and factual or interpretive claims that you did not come up with yourself. This can be accomplished easily by simply including the authors last name and page number or date of the original source (or both) after the sentence in which the idea was presented in your paper. (Santiago, p. 203, 6.7.2009) Submission: To locate the link for submitting your paper through Blackboard click on the Paper Assignment link in black at the top of the page (Either Midtrm Paper Assignment or Final Paper Assignment) . Please note that Blackboard only allows one submission for each assignment. After you submit in Blackboard, the assignment will be closed to you, so you only have one chance to submit your paper. Deadlines: Submit no later than midnight of the due date. The Blackboard system will lock out and completely remove the paper topic/submission page at that time. There are no excuses, computer problems, slow servers, etc. that will stop the Blackboard system from restricting your access after midnight of the due date. Please submit early enough to ensure that such matters do not trouble you. Digital Format: Word 97-2003 document (i.e. the file should be a .doc file, not a .docx or any other file format) Length: 5-6 pages of complete writing--AT MINIMUM 5 FULL PAGES OF WRITING! (see Writing Tips for further elaboration) Font: Times New Roman, 12 point, double spaced Margins: Standard 1 margins (this is the default in most versions of Microsoft Word) Title Page (not included as part of page count): Include name, course, title for the paper (if you have one), and any other identifying information you wish to include (date, semester, professors name, etc.)
