For this project, you will be working with (BitsIO) to help them develop a new employee training program that focuses on acculturating new employees to the organization's culture. This program will be used to supplement the existing new hire processes and is timely as the firm intends to double the amount of staff it has this year alone.
Create an onboarding program. You will need to use the SHRM website to learn more about onboarding programs and their design, as well as what makes the most effective programs. You may also search the library for research articles on training design.
Assignment:
As a starting point, you will need to provide the following:
- Materials and curriculum
- Processes that will facilitate the program.
- A timeline
Specifics for each element
Curriculum & materials
I expect you to create a coherent curriculum that teaches new employees about the organizations culture. These may include items employees read (like a one page overview that comes with the new employee paperwork sent ahead of the first day), the dialogue for a video from the CEO that the employee would watch, content for discussions the employee will have with their manager (both the questions managers should ask, and content managers should freely be sharing with employees), and even items like training for the managers that will be helping the employees onboard or ideas for tokens that have organizational symbols that can be used to help remind employees about the culture (e.g. a cardboard camera shield with the companys key values listed on it). So, while you do not have to have the video made, you need to have a script of the dialogue you all think will work best.
Processes
While much of the onboarding is through training, there are different methods of training, and different ways of ensuring that new employees are on the right track in learning the organizations culture, values, and goals. This can include training, evaluation, and feedback processes (at a minimum) though there may be more that you wish to include. Also, please think about who all needs to be involved in giving the training, ensuring this transfer of training (acculturation), and so forth. So, what is the HR manager going to do, what will be the individuals managers role, and will there be others involved (i.e., maybe the CEO should be involved in parts of the process). Titles are fine to use, as you dont know the organizations structure, but we need something that will facilitate HR to oversee the process.
Timeline
Onboarding can start as soon as the employee is offered the position through the language in the offer letter. I ask you to start from the point the employee accepts the job offer and plan out the timing of when the firm should interact with the new employee to help him or her learn about the firms culture, history, and values. Think about what should be done in each of these time frames:
- Before the first day on the job, but after accepting the position
- The first day on the job
- The first week on the job
- The first month on the job
- The first quarter on the job
- The first 6 months on the job
- Anything after the first 6 months
The next step in the process would be for the manager to inform HR how the employee is doing and discuss if there are any changes that need to be made to the employees onboarding experience.
Additional Instructions:
- You will need at least 7 academic references (from the Library or SHRM resources). These and the rest of your curriculum paper should be formatted to APA 7th edition standards.
