The mitochondria are known as the powerhouses of the cell because they conduct cellular respiration - they "burn" or break the chetlical bonds of glucose (made by plants) to release energy to do work in the cell. This energy is known as adenosine triphosphate, or ATP. The more active a cell (such as a muscle cell), the more mitochondria it will have. If oxygen is present, aerobic respiration occurs and produces 36-38 ATP molecules (shown below). If oxygen is not present, anaerobic respiration or fermentation occurs, which makes significantly less ATP energy.
