Fynn is 29 and has come to see Clive, a counsellor, because he has recently broken up
Question:
Fynn is 29 and has come to see Clive, a counsellor, because he has recently broken up with his girlfriend Stacey and she has moved out of their shared apartment. Stacey has been attending counselling sessions for several weeks and now wants Fynn to meet with Clive. Stacey says to Fynn that the decision on whether they want to be together can be discussed between the two of them at the end of Fynn's counselling sessions.
Fynn explains to Clive that Stacey moved out because she is unhappy about the amount of time he spends with his friends. When he is with his mates he generally stays out drinking and arrives home late. Fynn believes this is normal behaviour for someone his age and doesn't really understand why Stacey is so upset. Fynn loves Stacey and explains that he would like to marry her one day. Fynn tells Clive that his motivation for attending counselling is to get back with Stacey and acknowledges that the only way this will happen is if some sort of compromise is reached.
Over a number of sessions Fynn identifies that he needs to change the way he behaves. Working with Clive, Fynn explores his personal goals and discusses his strengths, including his ambition to be with Stacey and his respect and regard for her.
Fynn identifies that his main aim is to get back with Stacey. They discuss what Fynn would need to do to make this happen and come up with a list of options that include social and fun unplanned activities that they both enjoy. Clive and Fynn write a list of the resources he can access to make this happen and the list includes friends and family, money, local parks, their gym, and a friend's holiday house on the coast.
Near the end of their final session, Clive spends some time with Fynn going over the steps that led him to his final list of alternative actions. Fynn adds some comments as he reads over the list Clive has prepared. Fynn can see pros and cons for several of the options and identifies that several options are likely to be successful.
