Team Behavioral Norms Norms for behavior will develop, whether you like it or not. Norms can have a positive or negative impact on team functioning and support or impede a team's objectives. You have a choice about what behaviors you will make "normal." Example positive behavioral norms are: attending all meetings, coming prepared and on time for meetings (both in and outside of class), submitting written work to team members on time, regularly providing feedback to one another on submitted work, submitting high quality work, honesty, rules of etiquette, etc. What behavioral norms does the team wish to encourage in its members? In other words, what makes a good team member? What behaviors does the team wish to discourage or prevent from occurring? In addition, when discussing behavioral norms in a team, it is important to describe the behaviors indicative of following the norm. For example: "What does quality work look like?"; "What does it mean to show respect for one another's ideas?" Make a list of behaviors and attitudes that you want to encourage in your team and those you want to discourage in your team and discuss what those behaviors and attitudes "look like."
