Globalized economic expansion brings about consequences that are felt well beyond material prosperity and enhanced standards of living.

Please watch very carefully the interview of former New York Times journalist Chris Hedges with acclaimed writer Dr. Gabor Mat, author of the book "The Myth of Normal -- Trauma, Illness and Healing in a toxic Culture." In truth, it is a powerful book, one that I cannot make it mandatory to buy it, but I do strongly recommend to read it.

Closely pay close attention to the interview. You will realize that there are important links between the psychological health of individual and communities with the so-called consumer society which is driven by market forces.

You may notice also that there is an impact on culture. The interview alludes to the negative impact on Canadian native communities and minorities (the black population, for example in the US) that is derived from subjecting individuals to the rule of the current economic system. Hopefully you will realize that the negative impact is not limited to Native Americans or minorities. Just visit the devastated towns and cities in the Midwest of the United States and see the impact from deindustrialization on individual and community lives.
