Go to the Manager's Hot seat and write a reaction paper based on the following cases- Cultural differences: Let's break a deal? Project management: Steering the committee Use the guide that I gave you that can be found under course information to complete the assignment correctly. Cultural differences: Let's break a deal? Identify: The critical problem with the case is that ..... Michelle had a meeting with Norio who flew in from Japan to make a deal with Michelle's company on bringing products to the Japanese market. Michelle start asking about Norio's trip and then they talk about culture. Norio asks Michelle if he like sushi and he says Roger really likes sushi. Then Michelle tries to skip the conversation and tries to go ahead with business. Michelle showed interest in the deal and said he didn't have time for Norio to sign the deal because he had another meeting. Three days later Norio comes back into a meeting with Michelle and doesn't want to talk about the deal. Norio says he has to board a plane and leave for the airport. Analyze: Norio came from Japan to have a deal to promote products into the Japanese market. When Michelle and Norio had a conversation about sushi and Norio found out that Michelle didn't like sushi and rushed to sign the deal Norio didn't want to. Michelle wanted to sign the contracts and end the meeting, but Norio was expecting to have at least a couple of hours during the meeting, get to know the people his purchasing his product from and then make a deal. Evaluate: Norio thought that he came from Japan just to have this meeting and they didn't even give him enough time during the meeting. Decide: There are many things Michelle could have done differently one of them being having more time with Norio. The second being that she should have done research before entering the meeting. Draft: I think Michelle should have done his research before having a conversation with Norio and Michelle should have also had had more time for Norio when it was the meeting because like Michelle said Japanese people take their time when making a deal. I personally would have Roger have the meeting with Norio to have the gap of cultural differences be less there because there would have been common ground. Michelle should have talked with Norio on his fight schedule and asking him to dinner then try to connect with him that way. I don't think Norio was consistent on not making a deal because the pricing of the Mustang jeans were great but I think that since the lack of time discouraged Norio on pursuing a deal. Project management: Steering the committee Identify: The critical problem with the case is that..... . Patrick is the project manager at the company he's working at. Patrick is 30 days behind and over budget which was concerning to the other managers in the company. After a week later, they had another business meeting to see how things are going and to share they have are on schedule and under budget now. Patrick found a new hardware dealer that supplies His managers want him to have help he has so more time being wasted on future projects. Another co-worker stated that it should take Patrick another three weeks his schedule Patrick wants more confidence from his bosses because he has been working at the company for two years. Analyze: The company was trying to get work done and on schedule, but Patrick was over budget and behind the calculated schedule for 30 days. After finding a substitute for some parts of the hardware he managed to be under budget and on time, but his bosses wanted him to have help even though he said he didn't need it. Evaluate: When it comes to respect, trust and overall confidence in a company it needs to be present for all co-workers. In this case Patrick wasn't getting the respect he needed, and his bosses had nothing but negative thoughts on his performance. Decide: To give Patrick another chance and see how everything works out in the final project. Patrick should accept the help because work can be stressful as well. Draft: If an employee is working hard and showing that they are trying to accomplish the project and do a week later I don't think they need help. But Patrick over all wasn't getting respect from his bosses in the first place to begin with. He was looked down upon and his bosses always had some negative thoughts when it came to his work performance. Work is always stressful, but I don't think his managers should have given him a hard time about it nor should they have brought other co-workers into the conversation like they did with Frank. I also believe that sometimes it's not so bad accepting help because it could be overwhelming doing everything on your own.
