In this essay, I need to be describing, discussing, and analyzing at least two (2) persuasive images and reflect upon how the messages in the images are rhetorically communicated. the discussion will bring focus to the explicit and implicit messages that images communicate and how they do so by appealing to ethos, pathos, and logos. Lastly, you will reflect on how the assignment broadened your understanding of the use of rhetoric to convey meaning in visual messages.

Here are questions to ask about each image as you begin to work on your analysis:

1. What is the general mood of the image? How does it evoke or creating this mood? For example: If you say the image is patriotic, does it creating this mood through the use of red, white, and blue? Or do you see an American flag?
2. What is the primary subject of the image? Describe it in full detail from top to bottom.
3. Are there figures in the image? What can be said about their facial expressions, poses, hairstyle, age, sex, hair color, ethnicity, etc.?
4. What does the background tell you? What is the significance of the background?
5. What action is taking place and what is the significance of this action?
6. How are the basic elements of the image arranged? Is it chaotic and cluttered or clean and organized?
7. What about other aesthetic decisions? If the image is a photograph, what kind of a shot is it? What significance do long shots, medium shots, close-up shots have? What about the lighting, use of color, and angle of the shot?
8. If there is writing/typeface in an image, where is it placed?
9. What typefaces are used and what impressions do they convey? What color is the font and what might that convey about the image? What about the language used? Does it essentially provide information or does it try togenerate some kind of emotional response? Or both? What techniques are used by the copywriter: humor, alliteration, comparison, sexual innuendo, etc.?
10. What sociological, political, economic, or cultural attitudes are indirectly reflected in the image? An advertisement may be about a pair of blue jeans but it might, indirectly, reflect such matters as sexism, alienation, stereotyped thinking, conformism, generational conflict, loneliness, elitism, and so on.
