Hello class,
One of the internal dimensions I think can have the biggest impact on a group is cultural dimensions. In the textbook it is stated, "There are differences among people, and looking for patterns helps us in many practical ways. However, the judgments we place on various patterns and categories are not natural; they are learned and culturally and contextually relative. Our perceptual patterns do become unproductive and even unethical when the judgments we associate with certain patterns are based on stereotypical or prejudicial thinking." Many of the ways we are taught to think are dependent on our culture and many of the things we as individuals, consider to be normal or different are dependent on the culture in which we grew up Cultural difference is so significant in diversity because it helps individuals become more aware of the different ways in which people live and exposes us to different ways of thinking outside of our typical realm. I personally listen to a lot of health related podcasts and something about that I have found to be really cool is learning about health practices of cultures around the world. I have learned a lot about the nutrition, mindfulness practices, and daily practices of people from many different cultures and to me that has been really cool to be exposed to
I think two benefits of having a cultural dimension in a small group are the exposure to different cultures and exposure to new ways of thinking. I think it is important to be exposed to different cultures because when people are not, they may see someone of a different culture doing something they are not used to seeing and assume that person is "weird" for doing whatever it may be that they are doing. Becoming familiar with different cultures can help individuals realize that everyone is unique and that different is not weird. Working with someone of another culture is also important because experiences and ways of thinking can vary depending on culture. Working cloesly in a group with people of different cultures can help individuals gain a new perspective or open their mind to new ways of thinking.
I think two communication challenges that may impact a small group with cultural diversity are accents and differences in communication styles. People of different cultures may have accents that differ from one another. For some people understanding may be a challenge if they have never been around that accent before. We also adapt our communication to the culture we grow up in and oftentimes people may have different communication styles, so without clear communication there may be confusion or conflict.
I think the best way to handle these two communication styles is to be understanding and patient with one another. By using clear concise communication, issues can be avoided.
