In this project, you are required to design bucket mechanism of the backhoe loader. It is required to design the mechanism for only lifting purposes and one of the sample lifting charts is given below. The backhoe loader uses hydraulic pistons to actuate the motion of the backhoe loader bucket. Bucket mechanism of the backhoe is portable and may be joined to the caterpillar as illustrated in the figure above. While designing the components of the machine, the following chart will be useful. Portable backhoe loader 1- Finding the dimensions of the links of the bucket arm which will be able to move the given positions. So, it may be required a position analysis of the bucket arm which consists of three parts basically. 2- After determining the dimensions of the links, it is required to find the critical position. (Critical position is the position when applied load has the most dangerous effect on your design. Therefore, determine the critical position and design the machine elements for the critical point. 3- After finding critical point of your design, do the strength calculations of the members of the bucket arm. Determine thickness and cross-sectional properties of the members so as to keep the factor of safety at minimum 2. 4- Determine the fastener types that join the member of the bucket arm and find the factor of safety of these fasteners. 5- Start designing necessary machine components. Sample necessary machine components to run the mechanism are depicted below. Calculate the; • Free body diagrams (hand calculation) (separately stick, boom, bucket) Static calculations (hand calculation) (separately stick, boom, bucket) Stress analysis (hand calculation) (Members and fasteners) (separately stick.boom.bucket) Fatigue analysis (hand calculation) (separately stick.boom.bucket) Machine components design (Shafts, Bearings, Bolts, Fasteners) .
