For Project 1, you are tasked with creating a detailed report, explaining how you would prepare for and carry out an investigation for the case below. The Case: You are a digital forensics investigator working for Digital Examiners LLC, a private firm that specializes in conducting investigations for companies. Today, your company received a call from Eric and Patty Anders, the owners of Wright Research and Tech, a local company that develops and sells computer software. Eric and Patty are suspicious that one of their employees, Randy Evans, is selling proprietary data to one of their competitors. They give you the following information about Randy: He commonly asks for access to data and information from projects that he isnt working on, claiming he is just interested in learning about other projects. On several occasions, Randy has abruptly taken 2 to 3 days off of work for family emergencies, but it always seems to happen right after Wright Research and Tech has breakthroughs in their research. He recently purchased a new, expensive car and house, which he could not have reasonably afforded with his current salary. Randy refuses to allow IT to look at his computer, claiming that he doesnt want any updates. Eric and Patty have grave suspicions but have no hard evidence of any wrongdoings. The event that finally prompted Eric and Patty to call your company is that a rival software company has just released a product that happens to be very similar in nature to a project that Randy is working on. Eric and Patty tell you that Randys workstation contains the following devices: Company-provided work computer Company-provided cell phone Personal tablet Various external hard drives and USB sticks Eric and Patty tell you that Randy is protective over his items and would likely become frustrated and angry if he discovered that an investigation was taking place. Eric and Patty would like this investigation to happen as soon as possible. Lastly, they inform you that they are willing to press civil and criminal charges against Randy, depending on what information is discovered.
