Descriptive Statistics Assignment 1 CDC HNANES Database Survey Example

Please read the database survey information and review the Excel dataset from NHANES 2017-2018.

"The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) is a program of studies designed to assess the health and nutritional status of adults and children in the United States. The survey is unique in that it combines interviews and physical examinations. NHANES is a major program of the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS). NCHS is part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and has the responsibility for producing vital and health statistics for the Nation.

The NHANES interview includes demographic, socioeconomic, dietary, and health-related questions. Examination component consists of medical, dental, physiological measurements, and laboratory tests.

Findings from this survey will be used to determine the prevalence and risk factors for diseases. Information will be used to assess nutritional status and its association with health promotion and disease prevention. NHANES findings are also the basis for national standards for measurements as height, weight, and blood pressure. Data used in epidemiological studies and health sciences research, which help develop public health policy, direct and design health programs, and services, and expand health knowledge for the Nation."

The attached Excel file is a partial dataset from the NHANES 2017-2018 survey and contains the following variables: gender, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, BMI, general health question, BMI, hypertension.

Coding chart

Gender - 1=female, 2=male

General Health question - "How would you rate your health on a scale of 1 to 5, with 1 indicating excellent health and 5 indicating poor health?"

3. Using the table below. indicate the Levels of Measurement for each of the variables.

4. Using the table below, indicate whether the variables are continuous or categorical.

Levels of Measurement Category
Variable Nominal Ordinal Interval Ratio Continuous Categorical
Patient ID

unique identifiers without a meaningful order or numerical value.

.

Patient ID is categorial
Gender

This divides patients into groups (such as male and female) with no order.

Gender is a categorial without a meaningful order.
BMI BMI is a continuous variable with a true zero point, and the differences between values are meaningful BMI is a continuous variable
Systolic BP (Blood Pressure) Systolic blood pressure is a continuous variable with a true zero point. Systolic BP is continuous
Diastolic BP (Blood Pressure) Diastolic blood pressure is also a continuous variable with a true zero point.
General Health General health is often measured on a scale (e.g., poor, fair, good, excellent) that has a meaningful order but not equal intervals. General health is categorial
BMI Group BMI groups (ex. underweight, normal weight, overweight, obese) have a meaningful order but not equal intervals. BMI group is categorial
Hypertension Hypertension is a categorical variable indicating the presence or absence of the condition. Hypertension is categorial

5. Provide the sample (n), frequency, percentage, and cumulative percentage for the following variables. (Patients 1-100)

Variable n frequency percentage cumulative percentage
Gender
Female (1) 100 48 48% 48%
Male (2) 100 52 52% 100%
BMI

General Health
1 100 6 6% 6%
2 100 24 24% 30%
3 100 42 42% 72%
4 100 17 17% 89%
5 100 4 4% 93%
missing data 100 7 7% 100%
BMI Group
1. Normal 100 32 32% 32%
2. Overweight 100 30 30% 62%
3. Obese 100 38 38% 100%
Hypertension
yes 100 21 21% 21%
no 100 79 79% 100%

6. What does the data in this table regarding general health tell you?

7. In patients that have hypertension, calculate the frequency, percentage, and cumulative percentage of BMI category (Patients 1-100):

Variable n frequency percentage cumulative percentage
BMI
normal 10 10 47.6 47.6
overweight 47.6 + overweight percentage
obese 100

8. In one sentence, what does this tell you about the relationship between weight and hypertension?

9. In one or two sentences, please explain the main purpose of descriptive statistics.
