There are various reasons an employee can choose to join a labor union, including dissatisfaction with management, economic needs, social and status needs, etc. These motivations sum up the main reason being for better working conditions. Personally, in both of the jobs I held, I did not belong to a labor union. "Unions typically attempt to achieve greater participation in management decisions that affect their members. Specifically these decisions may involve such issues as the subcontracting of work, productivity standards, and job content" (Snell 502). This shows how many people typically join a union in order to receive benefits in areas such as better workplace treatment and job protection. I feel as if I could have benefitted from being a part of a union, especially considering working conditions. In being part of a union, safer working practices would be advocated for with support from other members.
