While having a "purpose" in a piece of writing seems fundamental, a writer's purpose can be challenging to define. For instance, in your request for a letter of recommendation, certainly the purpose of your request is to solicit a letter. But what else are you requesting? Certainly not just *any* letter. You are requesting a letter that highlights your achievements and paints you as the perfect candidate for a job or graduate school admission.

In this thread, identify three or four elements that you think define you as an employee or student (or both!). How could you communicate these things effectively to a letter of recommendation writer?

Talk a little bit about the audience for your letter of recommendation request. Is this audience a professional in your field? Is s/he an academic? What might really help this person to write an effective letter on your behalf? What might annoy or frustrate the writer?
