The same thing happened to me," "I know how you feel," "If I can get through it, you can too" are phrases people often use to connect with one another. Humans' gut instinct is to commiserate over shared experiences, or to use an example to connect with someone and affirm understanding. As a social work professional, however, you must consider how statements, such as the ones above, might be received by a client. For example, will the client be assured because you have navigated a similar challenge, or will their perspective of you change? Will the client find comfort in words of shared feelings, or will they withdraw because it seems like you are minimizing their experience? When you self-disclose, you must do so intentionally and with careful thought as to the implications.

In this Assignment, you analyze videos in which a social worker has used self-disclosure with a client. You then practice your own use of self.
