Inquiry Lab

For this final Curricular Competency activity you will have the opportunity to develop and execute an experiment entirely designed, planned, and executed by you - the budding physicist. You can choose to use anonline simulationof your choice OR you can design your own hands-on experiment that you can perform at home.

This lab is an opportunity for you to really demonstrate the skills and knowledge that you have developed throughout the duration of this course. Your lab will be submitted as a formal lab report with an emphasis on the 'Introduction' section of your lab report. In this section, you need to provide the reader detailed background information about the concept(s) that you are exploring in your lab.

You will need to come up with your own guiding question (some examples below as well) that you want to explore through this lab activity. Think about which concepts you would like to focus on and start by writing down any questions you might have related to it.

A few helpful hints:

  • Don't aim too big - this does not have to be a publishable research project - this is a grade 11 Physics lab - pick a concept, think about how you can prove/disprove an idea, and keep it simple!
  • Use the structures and resources that we have developed throughout the course. Think CER, use the tech tools to help you, check your biases, and ensure that you are following good scientific processes.
  • Review the feedback from all your other 'Competencies' activities and discussions - think about your competencies and how far you've come and what you can still improve on - focus on that!
  • Reach out for help if you are stuck - use the 'Course Questions Discussion Forum' or email your teacher.
  • Have PHUN! Physics is hands-on awesomeness! Take advantage of this opportunity.

Resources to consider:

  • List of PHET Physics simulators(not all of them are related to the concepts covered in this course)
  • Some sample guiding/essential questionsto get you thinking (this is not an exhaustive list, and is more intended to give you some samples to explore i.e. don't use these)
  • Consider reviewing the learning guides you worked on throughout this course to get inspired.
  • Check the discussion forums for ideas that you and/or other came up with.
