You are Dana, head of human resources for a manufacturing firm. You are well thought of in the firm and have excellent rapport with your boss, the vice president for administration. Blair is your employee relations managers She was hired in from outside the company and has worked in the department for the year. You know that Blair is reasonably good at her job and wants to be promoted. You also know that Blair believes herself to be "outstanding", but you believe that she needs to develop certain areas of her performance. Blair is scheduled to have a meeting with you in 5 minutes, and you would like to establish clearer communication as to where Blair stands on her performance and what she could do to improve.

You believe Blair is on the right track, but it could possibly take her 2 years to reach the stage at which she can be promoted. As for Blair's performance, you have received some good reports, as well as three letters of complaint from employees who felt that their employee relations issues had not been adequately addressed by her and her staff. Blair prepared four research reports that you considered to be above average, but not excellent. She is generally a good supervisor of her employees but you believe that she does not always provide effective direction or feedback to her employees.

So, you plan to set meaningful targets for Blair this year, evaluate her performance a year from now, and then give the promotion if it is deserved.

What do you say to Blair?
