Loading the sample and separating the analytes (a) Which substance was eluted first and which one was eluted next from the column? (b) Explain why these two analytes were eluted in this order. You will be provided with the following solutions and equipment: - MKMnO4 - MK2Cr2O7 - MHNO3 - MH2SO4 - 50mL burette (column) - Al2O3 - DI water 3.4.2 Procedure C. Preparation of chromatography column 1) Weigh 5.0g of Al2O3 in a beaker, add about 7.0mL DI water to it and mix to form a paste. 2) Into a 50-mL burette (column), place a small piece of cotton wool at the bottom and slowly transfer the paste into it. 3) Wash any remaining Al2O3 in the beaker with a little of DI water and add it into the column. 4) Take care not to trap air within the column. 5) Open the burette tap to rinse the water till the upper level of the Al2O3 (stationary phase). 6) Place another small piece of cotton wool at the upper level of the stationary phase. D. Loading the sample and separating the analytes 1) Transfer 2.0mL of each of the 0.01MKMnO4 and 0.02MK2Cr2O7 into a 50-mL beaker and mix them well. 2) Take 2.0mL of this mixture and slowly add it to the column. 3) Open the tap and rinse any drops remaing on the walls with DI water. 4) Add a liitle DI water to push the sample slightly into the column. 5) Add 0.1MHNO3 to elute KMnO4. Collect into a small beaker. 6) Once all of KMnO4 is eluted, add 1.0MH2SO4 to elute K2Cr2O7. Collect into another beaker
