This week we have an interesting topic to dive into, with 3-D printing and autonomous trains. The development of 3-D Printing on the rail industry is one that required a certain expertise and comes with significant challenges. One can expect the future of fabrication to move completely to 3-D printing, with some companies even creating rail line replacements with this capability. As 3D printing has become more and more popular, The United States market research institute IDC has estimated that 3D printing global sales will increase 30% annually from 2016 and 2019, eventually making it a $26 billion industry (Goulding, 2021).
This brings me to our next topic, autonomous trains which is directly tied to technology innovation. Some of the largest corporations have invested substantial funds into the development and deployment of the autonomous train (AT) technology (Singh, et all, 2021). In particular, the AT technology market was valued at $ 5.88 billion in 2018 and is anticipated to reach $ 15.57 billion by 2026 (Supradip B, 2019). Automation will eliminate or reduce, accidents, operational cost, human error, reduction on emission to name a few. Additionally, it will increase passenger capacity and freight transport with improved reliability of services (Supradip B, 2019). There is no mistake these technologies of 3-D Printing and AT will have a great impact in our daily lives and in the transportation industries. But since I am a POL-MIL Analyst by trade, I have to ask myself how much automation we will allow in defense rail transportation and what programs will be implemented against cyber-attacks.
