Linda Brown sat in a local coffee shop and thought about the last few years of her life. Linda had been an excellent student and played a variety of sports in high school and she had felt for many years that her career would develop in teaching. She had finished high school and attended university in eastern Canada on a scholarship. While there she completed an undergraduate degree in mathematics and then moved to another university to complete her education degree. Linda had also worked part time at a local restaurant and had worked with an organization, as a volunteer, to help new immigrants to develop their language skills. In 2007 Linda accepted a position as a math teacher in a high school in a small town about 75 miles from Halifax. She had been quite excited as she moved to her new location, leased an apartment, and purchased a small, nearly new car. She had settled into her job and new town quite nicely. Linda had been the last teacher hired by the local school board during the past few years. However, things had gone well at her school - she got along very well with the teachers in her Mathematics and Sciences Department as well as the other teachers in the school. The teachers ate lunch together in the staff room and occasionally held pot-luck suppers or other get-togethers at a teacher's home. Her colleagues were very supportive of Linda and she quickly immersed herself in the routine of teaching classes, preparing, grading, and coaching the girls' soccer team. Linda was well liked and respected by her students who found that she was an excellent teacher, had great patience, and was always willing to help any student in difficulty. Her Department Head, Mrs. Lapaix, was very pleased with Linda and her performance, in fact the two had begun to work on a series of new math problems for the Grade XI classes to better prepare them for Grade XII. In January Linda enrolled in a graduate degree in education, completion of which would lead to an increase in her license and her pay level - she thought that she had arrived at her career destination. One Monday in April, Linda was called to the office of the Principal, Mrs. Burgess. Mrs. Burgess informed Linda that due to recent budget reductions several positions at the school would be cut - Linda's teaching position would end in the coming June. Further, the prospect of getting her job back was very slim because many of the teachers were quite young and far from retirement. In July Linda moved back to her home town and out of desperation took a job in a department store. She had sent out many applications and resumes in an attempt to get another teaching job, but there seemed to be very few jobs available due to budget cuts to other school boards in other provinces. The job at the department store at least allowed her to earn a livable wage, but it was much less than she earned as a teacher. Further, the store was not a pleasant place for work according to Linda. The boss, Mr. Perkins, was a grumpy old man who demanded that people arrive on time, leave on time, treat customers with respect, and ask no questions of him. Linda had tried on several occasions to give him some ideas with respect to new products and displays, but she was told curtly that he would make all merchandising decisions. Her co-workers were much older than she was and all had husbands or wives and children in school and most of the talk in the lunch room focused on the staff's children. Some of the sales clerks played cards with great gusto, but Linda did not like to play cards, so she tended to sit by herself and read or she would run errands during breaks and lunch. In fact, Linda was late returning from lunch one day and Mr. Perkins let her know in no uncertain terms that such behavior would not be tolerated and repeat offences would be met with dismissal
