How does Dubai compare with the other GCC countries in terms of total population? How does Dubai compare with the other GCC countries in terms of the non-immigrant population as a percentage of the total population?

There are six Middle Eastern countries in the GCC. They are the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain and Oman (Shayah, 2019). The reason these countries came together and formed the GCC is because they have demographic similarities (fast growing population, high number of expat workers) and the GCC was put in place to promote trade between them. Dubai, and all the countries in the GCC, have a high number of expat workers. Per our textbook, Dubai cannot develop without foreign workers and relies on Indian workers to come to Dubai, using three-year work visas, because they can earn more in Dubai than they can in India (Daniels, Radebaugh, & Sullivan, 2018). While all countries in the GCC have a high number of expat workers, Dubai has the largest amount. 89% percent of Dubais work force is non-national and only 11% is national (Shayah, 2019).

How important do you think migration and therefore capital remittances are for each of the countries in the GCC?

I think migration and capital remittances are very important for all the countries in the GCC. I think the ability to migrate to another country to earn a higher wage and send money back to your family at home is important for both the host country and the home country. Dubai needs the workers from India to help build and diversify their economy. Oil is one of the primary money makers for the countries in the GCC, but with Dubai gaining workers from India, Dubai can now expand their hotel and hospitality industry to promote tourism as another major source of income. India doesnt offer as lucrative of pay as Dubai, and so the workers rely on capital remittance to send the money back home. This is important for Dubais economy and Indias.
