How does it compare with the other GCC countries in terms of total population and the non-immigrant population as a percentage of total population?

There are a total of six countries in the Middle East that are a part of the GCC. The countries are as follows: Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, and Oman (Secretariat General of the Gulf Cooperation Council, 2023). These countries formed the GCC due to similarities due to increased population and significant numbers of expat workers. The creation of the GCC promotes trade between the countries due to the high numbers of expat workers. According to Daniels et al. (2018), "Although workers from India and Pakistan go to Dubai to work because of higher wages, they are recruited by companies in Dubai. Because of Dubai's relatively small local Emirati population (only 19 percent of the total population), there is no way the country could develop without foreign workersskilled, semiskilled, and unskilled" (pg. 237). Employees must have permits to work in Dubai for three years at a time, increasing the speed of urbanization and positively impacting the infrastructure and economy. Dubai has the highest amount of expat workers at 89%. Only 11% of the workforce is national, while the rest is not (Migration Policy Institute, 2022).

How important do you think migration and therefore capital remittances are for each of the countries in the GCC?

Migration and capital remittances are crucial for each of the countries in the GCC. This would be due to gaining higher wages from migrating to another country while increasing diversification in the host country. Host countries such as Dubai can hire workers from India and Pakistan, which can help expand other industries that still need development. Capital remittance is crucial for workers as the money earned is then sent back home and improves the welfare of the family members that are left in the home counties of these workers. The receiving countries, such as India and Pakistan, have the potential to boost their economies from remittances.
