How to respond to the DQ answer regarding the article A strain research team from the book Leadership: Theory and Practice
1.Looking at the case study from the view of the skills approach and applying it to Dr. Wood, we see that his technical skills are extremely high as well as his Conceptual skills. We know this because everyone in the group admires him for his knowledge, and ability to problem solve surrounding topics. They also know this from his ability to achieve the goals that present themselves like the lacking in funding. However, if we look at his Human skills, he is extremely lacking. He is degrading his team members, not delegating tasks, and causing burn out among his team by never giving them praise, but only words of discouragement. His project could be successful, but it will require him to either change his approach or take all the work on himself causing it to probably miss the deadline.
2.Dr Wood does not possess the skills to be the leader of this team but should be an individual contributor. He can achieve goals given to him with ease, but his lack of skills surrounding human interactions, makes him more of a hinderance to the team, rather than a contributor.
3.If I were to take those three competencies, I would praise him for his knowledge and problem-solving skills. He has shown many times to excel in both of those areas, and they deserve to be recognized.I would coach him then the area of social judgment skills. In fact, I would present his lacking in this competency as a problem, so that he can apply his skills towards solving this.Coaching him to recognize people's contributions, delegating tasks instead of having unvoiced expectations, and to never disrespect the team, but rather question their status and how we can work better at being more efficient.
