How to solve
Select a solid product made of engineering materials you encounter daily. It is not necessary to select a complicated final product or component, like a vacuum cleaner, a coffee machine, a cell phone, an automatic transmission, or a carburetor. However, it should have at least three discrete single parts. Answer the following questions:
(a) Explain why you selected your product and include a photo of the product showing your student ID. If you are confident that you can disassemble the product and reassemble it correctly for use, you may add an additional photo showing the parts.
(b) For three discrete single parts of your product, describe how each part was manufactured and why you think it was manufactured that way. Your description for each part should be no more than 5 sentences. Note that if your answers have more than 5 sentences or incomplete sentences for each part, your grade will be "Incomplete."
If you cannot find any information about the part, the answers will be based on your educated guesses from the inspections and observation of the part. Personal experiences from co-ops, internships, or previous jobs can be used. However, your guesses should be accompanied by reasons supported by scientific proofs or evidence, such as citations of publications, data, measurements, characterizations, observations, the company's catalog, the company's information about your co-ops, and so on. These scientific proofs or evidence should be listed in the references, following the guidelines below.
(c) Freehand sketch an isometric drawing of your product. The drawing should be the assembly or disassembly drawing with all its single discrete parts located and identified. It is NOT necessary to add a detailed drawing of each part with dimensions or further information.
Figure 2 is an example of the disassembly drawings with the locations and identifications of the single discrete parts. More detailed drawings of a specific part or for the assembly are also shown in Figure 2. The lists of single discrete parts can be included as a table like a bill of materials (BOM) in the drawing.
