The path-goal theory has the following four leadership behaviors associated with it: directive, supportive, participative, and achievement-oriented leadership. All four of these leadership styles/behaviors help leaders motivate their team to achieve company goals. Directive Leadership- A directive leader sets clear standards of performance and makes the rules and regulations clear to followers (Northouse, 2018). This style is heavily focused on thorough communication around what needs to be done including all instructions and the necessary information. Supportive Leadership- This style is focused on the relational aspect a leader has with their team. The leader tries to make a comfortable setting for their followers. This style is filled with treating followers as equals and still providing support for them to achieve goals. Participative Leadership- This style can be described as a partnership. A leader places a large importance on consulting with their followers when it comes to decisions. As a leaders team is closer to the customers, products, etc. their input add much value in decision making. Achievement- Oriented Leadership- High standards is the epitome of this leadership style. Those standards are continuously raised. This style comes with a lot of trust from a leader to their followers. A leader can easily exhibit all of these traits or a combination of them within their teams. Path-goal theory is not a trait approach that locks leaders into only one kind of leadership (Northouse, 2018). Each individual follower may need a different leadership style when it comes to motivating them to achieving goals. I think of my current boss. As the most tenured member on her team her leadership style with me is more of the achievement-oriented kind. She lets me self-manage for the most part but constantly pushes me to be better and take on more. With the newest member to our team she is very supportive. She is focused on making him comfortable and slowing breaking him in as he works towards goals.
