You weren't lying to your friend, you were just uninformed. If someone chooses to spread information that they know is not true then I would consider them a liar, but there are many reasons people lie. A parent may lie to their child about the truth of Santa, to keep the magic of Christmas alive. On the other hand, many people lie to save their face or avoid taking responsibility.
