Question: In the conclusion of Naked Statistics, Target used regression analytics to figure out that a high school girl was pregnant before her father knew about it. Target then used specific advertising to that family to market the girl for pregnancy related items. Do you think this is an ethical practice? Why was Target so concerned with getting to this girl when they knew she was pregnant? How did Target fix their advertising so that pregnant women would not think they were being targeted with advertising for pregnancy? Answer : To be honest, I think this is not an ethical practice. And there are some reasons that Target so concerned with getting to this girl when they knew she was pregnant. Firstly, when the girl was pregnant, it is more likely for her to buy some pregnancy related items. Target pushing ads to her can increase the advertising profitability and attract more attract more businesses to advertise on Target. More importantly, a high school girl is too young to judge the usefulness of the product. So when she sees the ad, she is very likely to buy the product in the ad and Target can get a certain amount of revenue by pushing ads to her. To avoid the pregnant women think they were being "targeted" with advertising for pregnancy, Target should add some of the ads that were pushed to them daily in the past. Also, Target can add more ads that are not related to them
