Interpersonal communication overall is the way people convey messages, emotions, and ideas to each other in different ways. Communication can be done verbally, in writing, or through actions. Interpersonal communication also deals with decoding and interpreting communication that is received. Communication is a two-way street and it is just as important to comprehend as it is to effectively communicate.
Some barriers to communication that can occur include noise, information filtering, mixed messages, and overload (Uhl-Bien et al., 2021).
- Noise includes anything that gets in the way of clear communication. Items like cultural differences, lack of feedback, differences in expressions, and poor communication channels
- Information filtering is centered around the way that people censor or re-frame information that is not as objective. If communication may have perceived repercussions, then information filtering may happen.
- Mixed messages occur when verbal and nonverbal communication are in conflict. Think of when someone is clearly upset but exclaims Its fine.
- Overload or information overload is when there is too much going on at once. While context and collaboration are fine, there needs to be a clear goal and methods for relay of communication. If not, then messages can be lost or drowned out.
Most aspects of good interpersonal communication translate the same in both relational and organizational contexts. However, the differences are present in how they are used. In organizational contexts, good interpersonal communication revolves around goals and processes. The whole point of interpersonal communication in organizations is being able to effectively convey what needs to be done and how to accomplish it. While it is important to be mindful of others and their feelings, the ultimate goal is the task at hand. Meanwhile, in a relational context, interpersonal communication is more centered around the health of the relationship itself. While there may be some objective-oriented factors behind it in this context, most of the reason why interpersonal communication is so important in relationships is because maintaining the relationship is the goal.
