Q1) What types of communication did you observe? I visualized various forms of nonverbal communication such as eye contact, personal space, gestures, body movementand posture, and facial expressions. Eye contact refers to how an individual uses the eyes when communicating with another person. The way that an individual maintains eye contact or fails to do it conveys many things, such as affection, hostility, interest, and attraction. Personal space is the amount of space that individuals need to communicate comfortably. Personal space can be used to indicate affection, intimacy, dominance, and aggression. Gestures are specific acts woven into the fabric of everyday living, which are used when people express themselves. Some of the gestures include pointing, beckoning, waving, and raising hands when speaking. Body movement and posture refer to how people walk, stand, sit and hold their hands which makes up the posture, stance, bearing, and subtle movements. How people perform these activities speaks volumes about themselves and their relationship with the individuals around them. Facial expressions are the various emotions conveyed by the human face through emotions, Facial expressions such as anger, happiness, fear, surprise, sadness, and disgust are universal. On the other hand, people from collectivist cultures were comfortable. Also, individuals from different ethnicities experienced language barriers and could not communicate effectively (Morioka et al., 2016). The inconsistency in the verbal and non-verbal messages sent usually caused misunderstandings among the people who were communicating. Q3) Describe differences in communication among people (consider differences such as age, gender, and ethnicity). Based on gender, I found that men are likely to command and use personal space than women. Also, men prefer face-to-face communication and easily shake hands and pat shoulders. On the other hand, women are likely to communicate when side-by-side and in close proximity with the people they are talking to. Regarding age, peers (the old and young) do not have formal protocols when talking. However, it was necessary to establish protocols when a young person was talking to an older one. Example: I attended a three month course on campus in Florida and we focused on the discrimination and how different cultural, gender, and generational backgrounds can have challenges that create conflict due to limited education about how to respectfully communicate with other people.
