A description of the four philosophical assumptions.
Before briefly describing the four philosophical assumptions, we must answer why philosophy is essential to the researcher and research. According to Creswell and Poth (2018), "Philosophy means the use of abstract ideas and believes that inform our research" (p. 16). First, it is imperative to note that each research brings questions, requests, or information about a specific topic, personal history, or perspective of themselves or others. Secondly, researchers bring to their inquiries that "provide direction for the study, such as the researcher's view of reality (ontology), how the researcher knows reality (epistemology), the value stance taken by the inquirer (axiology), and the study's procedures (methodology)" (Creswell & Poth 2018, 18). Their inquiries lead to philosophical assumptions that guide their study, which the research applies to research using paradigms and theories. Moreover, "for the researcher, reporting assumptions requires serious reflection on the foundation of the research" (Coates, 2021, p. 2). In qualitative studies, researchers use the following four philosophical assumptions: ontological, epistemological, axiological, and methodological.
First, ontological assumptions refer to the nature of reality and its characteristics (Creswell & Poth 2018, p. 20). Moreover, our ontological positions establish our knowledge process (Slevitch, 2011, p. 2). For example, the qualitative researcher willingly accepts and supports multiple or divergent realities from themselves, study participants, and those who read their study. As a result, the researcher is concerned with using numerous forms of evidence, such as themes and participants' or individuals' words, to captivate different perspectives and experiences related to the phenomenon they are studying. Secondly, epistemological assumptions are defined as how a researcher gains knowledge in their field of study through people's subjective experiences. For example, the best way for a researcher to gain insight into how people experience a phenomenon is by "getting close as possible to participants being studied," such as using a qualitative method of participant observation (Creswell & Poth 2018, p. 21). Thirdly, axiological assumptions emphasize a researcher's values and biases and how they might affect research. As previously stated, the researcher brings a set of values, beliefs, preconceived notions, or biases to a study. To avoid value imposition, researchers must acknowledge and "admit the value-laden nature of the study and actively report their values and biases as well as the value-laden nature of information gathered from the field" (Creswell and Poth, 2018, p. 21). So, what is my research interest area?
