Instructions Submit close readings of 2 children's picture books (you can select from your own books, a library, or from those | have posted under Content). DIRECTIONS | have posted 20 picture books under Content to help you have lots to choose from. Choaose two picture books that stand out to you in some way and put together a word document in MLA format (see OWL MLA for more help if you need a refresher on MLA) in which you provide the following for the first selected book: Af feast one paragraph that describes the physical construction of the book At feast one paragraph that describes how text is used on any specific interior page of vour choosing At feast one paragraph that describes how images are used on any specific interior page of your choosing At feast one paragraph that describes how design elements are used on any specific interior page of your choosing At feast one paragraph that describes your overall response to the picture book Then, repeat the same process with the second selected picture book (you can do this in the same document or 2 separate documents). | will admit that | am partial to students' writing that blends personal responses and reactions with the conventions of academic form. However, please use whichever style of writing that you are confident in and comfortable with. In any event, please use complete sentences and well-developed paragraphs. In any case, | want you to focus as much on the how as you do the what when it comes to the meanings that we interpret in various works of children's literature. Part of this analytical and evaluative skills that | want you to demonstrate would include recognizing the ways that each text-type and/or literary form renders its meanings. Poems work differently than novels; comic books work differently than video games; films work differently than essays; and so on. In this case, there are many ways that picture books construct their meanings. To me, there are three major aspects of picture books' meanings that | would like you to pay attention to: 1) text 2) image 3) design Essentially, the meanings of most picture books are the result of the combination of the words, the pictures, and the compositional choices regarding how all of the elements are put together. In fact, this would include the construction of the book itself (the size, the shape, the materials, the printing process, the number of pages, etc.)
