I need help responding to this discussion board post in 150 words or more.
Currently working in a retail environment, many of the employees I interact with are recent high school graduates and college students, or associates that found themself in retail years ago and never left. I want to understand how to motivate younger employees to take their jobs, whether entry-level or not, seriously. I also want to explain why people stay in the same position for years without looking for growth and learn how to predict what associates will make the retail environment their career. As a manager, I have found that young people that are eager to prove themselves provide great results. But the young people that think of their position as just a job, do what they need to do, no more, no less. Understanding both types of younger employees will pave the way to understanding how to motivate them to ensure the eager employee is not doing their job and someone elses as well. According to Dr. Kelly S. Meier (2019), behavior in the workplace that one should avoid is leaning on the top performers. By influencing all of the employees, instead of just the ones that are eager to do their job, there will be more of a well-rounded team. With the associates that have been in the same position for years and havent looked to better themselves nor move elsewhere, they require different attentions. Understanding how to provide them with incentives that will keep them from being complacent while also ensuring that they are learning how to use new sales techniques and resources. The lifetime retail associates may feel that the way they have continued to do things is good enough but as businesses change, so do best practices. Following what Luthans, Luthans, and Luthans state that for effective diversity management, it is important to create a work environment or culture that allows everyone to contribute all that they can to the organization (2015). With the diverse range of ages and goals in the employees, finding ways to create the best team possible is imperative. Ideally, organizational behavior will allow for me to grasp why the employees I interact with are the way that they are and master how to speak to them and encourage them to provide the best results.
