MATERIALS - Beer's Law Kit (contents: 10mL graduated pipet, rubber bulb, 10 mi, volumetric flask, plastic stopper, 7 cuvettes, UV-Vis Spectrophotometer with cord) - Labquest Part A: Preparation of Standard Solutions 1. Clean and dry a small beaker. Label it "stock." Transfer approximately 40mL of the stock Allura red solution to this beaker. 2. Clean the 10mL graduated pipet repeatedly with DI water. Rinse the clean pipet three times with 1mL of the stock Allura red solution, turning the pipet on its side and rolling the pipet to coat all of the interior glass surface. The Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for Pipets can be found in the Appendix on PAGE 106, for further directions. 3. Clean the 10mL volumetric flask and rinse three times with DI water. 4. Prepare solutions 1-6 using the stock Allura red volumes in the table below. Add enough DI water to bring the total volume to the line on the neck of the flask. Note: solutions 1 and 6 do NOT need to be prepared in a volumetric flask. 5. To fill the cuvettes, pour solution 2 into a clean 30mL beaker. Then, pour solution 2 from the beaker into the cuvette. Be sure to rinse each cuvette with the solution before filling. Place each cuvette in the corresponding spot on the cuvette card as you fill them to prevent confusion. Repeat with solutions 26 and make sure to rinse and dry the beaker in between solutions.
