In todays world, technology plays an important role in every industry as well in our personal lives. The most important one is in healthcare. Thanks to advanced technology, many doctors are able to better diagnose and treat their patients. Countless lives have been saved and the overall quality of life continues to improve over time.
According to Humanitas University, as technology is emerging, it is changing the world completely so does it to the medicines' world. Many such revolutions to the medicines have taken place. Several innovations have helped to solve issues with diabetes, congestive heart failures, stressful isolations as well as many more. Even now researchers are targeting a few more areas like heart failures. This would need 3 sensors to be used like the wristband, necklace and watch which would help to keep a track of the heart rate and pumping criteria (Hunimed. Web, 2016). However, this would help the doctors to fetch information and be updated as to what is the condition. According to Kaiser Permanentes Los Angeles Medical Center, the 3D printing technology also helps in providing a clear picture of the areas of a problem within a patient to help the doctors make a better diagnosis (Hunimed Web, 2016).
One of the efficient innovations is the monitoring tool which helps the doctors to monitor the effect and condition of improvement in a patient. This can also be done at their home which makes the doctor and patient convenience. Not to forget the pacemaker which has helped many patient's mortality rates. There is a huge connection between technology and healthcare for benefitting the society. Some of the technologies namely Big Data analytics helps in analyzing huge data generated in the hospital to get some useful tips that benefits both doctors and the patients. There are many electronic devices that are available in the market to sense of our body conditions from home itself that can send to the doctor in no time (Hunimed, 2016).
Technological developments and advancements have been a two-sided coin in the health care sector leading to its fair share of both advantages as well as disadvantages, both for the patients as well as for the healthcare professionals. Firstly, the advantage of technological developments in the health care sector led to digitalization of health records and emergence of the now prevalent electronic health records (EHR) (Banova, 2018). The use of EHR has led to several benefits in the health care sector and some of the benefits are improved level of public health, reduced paper work and administrative work. EHR enables improvement in public health as it automatically alerts the physician on call to potential issues being faced by a patient. The physician on call is able to retrieve the entire medical history of the patient and hence is able to treat the patient in a better manner.
Secondly use of EHR, when compared to paper-based system has led to reduction in time spent on data entering and more importantly has reduced the risk of errors with regards to a patients data. Another important advantage of this system is that data of a patient can be accessed instantly, at the click of a button. According to American Institute of Medical Sciences and Education, the number of medical records has jumped from 13,600 to 69,000 (Banova, 2018). All these leads to significantly higher levels of efficiency and productivity and all stakeholders in the health care sector stand to gain from this. In the long run use of EHR will lead to significant tangible benefits, both for the patients and the health care professionals, like avoiding deaths that can be prevented using timely medical interventions and treatments, reduced costs of health care, better quality of life, higher levels of efficiency and higher are of development of new drugs. Besides EHR other technological advances in the medical field that are benefiting people are use of cloud computing for better and safe storage of data and improved access to big data.
According to HIMSS Analytic Survey health care industry, the percent of IT professionals using the cloud for medical research is 75% and still rising (Banova, 2018). Furthermore, emergence of telemedicine and telehealth leading to lower crowded waiting rooms, shorter wait time for patients and improved access in rural areas. But while the technological developments and advances had led to several benefits it has its own share of disadvantages and drawbacks. First of all, it is not possible to completely remove the human error factor. The equipment can be stolen in which data is stored and this can lead to compromise of privacy of patients. Data is always vulnerable to security risks and risks of data protection and protection of data of patients cannot be totally guaranteed.
