Research and describe the PEST Analysis. Next, identify how PEST Analysis could be utilized in the profession. List the pros/cons of using a PEST Analysis in a business setting. Lastly, explain how this new "tool" compares to the tools you learned in the previous FishBone Analysis tool.

The PEST analysis allows for you to examine specific external factors that can affect your business, and help identify how they will affect your performance and activities in the long term. (Frue, 2020) The key points of this technique are political, economical, social, and technological. Utilizing this analysis technique, we can look into the Marine Corps court reporting program from an outward-in perspective as to why it still exists.

Political: This falls more into the expanded "Legal" portion of the longer PESTLE analysis; however, under R.C.M. 1112, a verbatim transcript of the proceedings is required for appellate use in cases where a punitive discharge is adjudged.

Economical: The court reporting program has gone away from stenography and voice-writing, and in turn, has gone to voice-to-text AI transcription in the name of retention and saving money. What originally cost the Marine Corps $60,000 for a stenographer to go through school and $35,000 for a voice-writer to learn their craft, it now costs the Marine Corps $17,000 to train scopists instead.

Social: The current stigma within the Marine Corps regarding the 4422 MOS has deterred many paralegals from taking the guaranteed career advancement of becoming a court reporter; with reduced interest and an increased workload, it is hard to see growth in this field without significant incentives.

Technological: Initially, when the Marine Corps switched to AI transcription, the AI utilized was IBM Watson, who had a word confidence level of approximately 80 to 83 percent; the accuracy required from the NCRA is 95 percent accuracy. Currently, the Marine Corps utilized Speechmatics, which has a word confidence level of 93 to 97 percent, coming close or surpassing the requirements set by the NCRA.

The PEST analysis can be effectively utilized with the SWOT analysis to determine what external and internal factors are contributing to your business's rise and downfall.
