Highlighted / Coded Job advertisement, Criteria, Tailored CV and Cover letter for Job ad of YOUR CHOICE (15%)
Your assignment:
- Find a current advertisement at an international company. The advertisement must be in English. Dont choose a minimalistic advertisement (min. 1.5 A4 pages long), ideally choose an advert for a position you would actually be interested in.
- Copy the job advertisement and its URL link to a Word document
- Use (color) coding* to highlight relevant parts in the advertisement and create criteria produced from the advertisement with same (color) coding* (5%)
- Tailor your CV based on this criteria* (5%)
- Tailor your cover letter for this criteria* (5%)
*Either use a certain color to represent a certain skill (e.g. analytical skill yellow; communication green, etc..) and highlight all relevant parts in the ad with that color and then highlight relevant parts in your criteria and CV and cover letter with the same colorFor Personality and Company Keywords you can select one color to represent the whole category, but for Skills use different colors for different skills categories.
OR use a code with abbreviations e.g (A) for analytical, (IP) for interpersonal, etc and insert those codes both into the ad and all other documents. Add a list of what your abbreviations stand for.
You shouldnt really need this part anymore, but here it is just in case, please follow the guidance:
- Have all parts of the task within the same document for the online submission to SU COURSE - Assignments.
- Follow this order: 1. Advertisement (coded), 2. Criteria(coded), 3. Tailored CV(coded), and 4. Cover Letter (coded),. Each part should start on a fresh / new page.
- Do not paraphrase while creating your criteria! For lengthy parts you may use elliptical clauses, but make sure key terms are there.
- Make sure it is clear in your criteria how often certain skills are mentioned in the ad. (Check Criteria for Job Analysis SU COURSE- Resources PPP Wk 3 for an example). Make sure you do a thorough job for the criteria.
- Make sure the content of your CV matches the items in the criteria as much as possible based on your real life experiences.
- You can choose how you want to organize your CV: skills-based, chronological or combination. Remember it depends on what you want to emphasize.
- Follow the formatting guidelines for CVs refer to sources on SU COURSE Resources - CVs and the PowerPoint of Week 3 on SU COURSE Resources PowerPoints if necessary.
- You might want to evaluate your CV by using the Self-evaluation checklist CVs document before you submit / or have a look at the Criteria for grading CVs on the Syllabus tab in SU COURSE.
- Refer to Cover Letter Basic Outline doc available on SU COURSE Resources Cover Letters and any other relevant material (powerpoint ) for guidance with that part of your task.
