Write a breeding plan describing how you will accomplish your goals (real or hypothetical) with your favorite domesticated species for which artificial selection is practiced. (If you focus on captive wild animals, you will need a pretty in depth understanding of captive breeding programs.)

Some questions to consider regarding your breeding plan:

• How will you market/sell your animals?
• How will you make improvement for multiple traits?
• What traits will you focus on improving?
• How will you measure those traits?
• What technologies will you use as part of your breeding plan?
• How will you measure genetic progress?
• What will your accuracy of selection be?
• What will your intensity of selection be?
• What will your generation interval be?
• Will you purchase or develop sires/males?
• Will you purchase or develop dams/females?
• How will you manage inbreeding?
• Will you use and produce purebred animals or will you crossbred? How will you manage the trade-offs between purebred and crossbred mating systems?

The use of graphs, diagrams, and tables are encouraged. However, these should be put at the end of the document and do not count towards your minimum page requirement of text. (I.e. have one page of solid text, followed by a graph on page 2.)

I encourage you to be creative and for your essay to reflect your passion for animal sciences.

This is not intended to be a punitive assignment, rather an opportunity for you to reflect and make connections about how quantitative genetics will impact you and your career moving forward.
