Summary of Main Different Research Methods/Strategies (Saunders et al., 2003)
Experiment“Research strategy that involves the definition of a theoretical hypothesis; the selection of samples of individuals from known populations; the allocation of samples to different experimental conditions; the introduction of planned change on one or more of the variables; and measurement on a small number of variables and control of other variables” (Saunders et al., 2003, p.477)
Survey“Research strategy that involves the structured collection of data from a sizable population.” (Saunders et al., 2003, p.491) Normally this entails the use of a questionnaire (Saunders et al. 2003).
Case Study‘a strategy for doing research which involves an empirical investigation of a particular contemporary phenomenon within its real life context using multiple sources of evidence’ (Saunders et al. 2003, p.93, citing Robson, 2002, p.178).
Grounded Theory“…data generated by a series of observations…” (Saunders et al., p.93) is used to develop theory.
EthnographyThis strategy emanates from the field of anthropology and is an approach which aims to interpret the social world people inhabit in the way they interpret it (Saunders et al., 2003).
Action Research“Research strategy concerned with the management of a change and involving close collaboration between practitioners and researchers. The results flowing from action research should also inform other contexts.” (Saunders et al. 2003, p.472).
It also normally also entails addressing a real-world problem by applying theory to it in cycles of action and reflection (Sharp, 2004).
NB ·You will find different definitions in different literature!!- My advice:
- choose a definition,
- cite the source
- stick with it in your research
- show your logical thinking
