Question: if edge in the spanning tree then we can contract the edge, and if edge is not in spanning tree we can deete the edge,

if edge in the spanning tree then we can contract the edge, and if edge is not in spanning tree we can deete the edge, but in both cases number of spanning trees remains same. Why? why deleting or contracting doesn't change the number of spanning trees??
