Question:
Superchargers, although parasitic, are being used with a small displacement engines. This design philosophy is in support of lean burn, high compression, and increased BSFC. A new strategy to keep the internal combustion engine relevant vs EVs. Choose a current NA auto engine different from your platform engine. Use Fig 1 to corroborate its ignition timing and calculate its BMEP. Now consider that another NA auto engine with a displacement volume of 1.6 L is to be increased in pressure to 130 kPa from Po = 101 kPa and To = 298 K using a roots supercharger. An intercooler will be used to cool the compressed air entering the engine to Ti = 320 K. As a baseline reference, the engine is to use gasoline with stoichiometric combustion in some mid-range RPM (show the combustion reaction). The engine thermal efficiency ?t = 0.35. The supercharger performance map is given. The supercharger is mechanically coupled to the engine and rotates at twice the engine speed. Make valid assumptions and choose wisely.
