Question:
In 1992 Lesgar Dawkins, opened L&N Dawkins with two machines he had bought, and a third borrowed from his former boss, and L&N Dawkins Engineering was born. L&N Dawkins Engineering Works Ltd. is the fulfilment of a dream for Managing Director Lesgar Dawkins. Lesgar's entry into the world of mechanical engineering came through a friend who introduced him to the owner of a machine shop who had a vehicle that Lesgar was interested in purchasing.
Originally trained in electrical installation and shoemaking, Lesgar's new position meant that he had to become familiar with every aspect of the business. As he walked the machine shop floor each day he became fascinated with what the workers were doing and gradually learned and grew passionate about engineering. L & N Dawkins specializes in manufacturing and industrial equipment repair services, servicing utility companies as well as customers in the mining, construction, food service and automotive industries.
Over 30 years, L & N Dawkins has distinguished itself from the competition through precision and quality. In a field where inferior work can be costly to finances, productivity, and safety, they don't believe in cutting corners. Instead, they pride themselves in manufacturing or repairing parts to the original manufacturer's specifications. Their customers know that they can depend on them for good service and superior quality.
The business is now a family operation run by Lesgar, his wife Hyline and son Gavin. L&N has worked hard to adapt to the needs of the industry and the challenges that the world of business presents. In a time when many businesses have folded under economic pressure, the company has managed to rise above the challenges, with a solid reputation and a following of loyal, satisfied customers. The quality products and services and services are excellent but there is no Vision and Mission Statements. It is not clear what the strategic objectives of L & N Dawkins Engineering Works Ltd.
Human Resources
Gavin is a University of Technology, Jamaica graduate with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Computing and Information Technology, his mother Mrs. Hyline Dawkins is a graduate from Jamaica Theological Seminary with a degree in Guidance and Counselling. The mother and son duo are responsible for the Administrative and HR aspects of the business while his father Mr. Legar Dawkins focuses on the operational as aspect of the business. The senior Dawkins has been managing a relatively profitable business over the years with limited academic qualifications.
Under the leadership of Mr. Lesgar Dawkins, the company established itself as an organization of service excellence and a high customer retention rate. In addition, they have seasoned and experienced workers, most of which have over ten years' experience. L&N has lost six of its best employees over a 5 year period to other competitors who are offering more attractive compensation. The current qualifications for a Machinist is a High School Diploma and HEART certification/Apprentice programme. There is need for higher educational qualifications in some areas.
Competition
In 2021 a new competitor entered the market with high quality machinery and highly trained employees. This has forced Dawkins Engineering to acquire new machinery and equipment to remain competitive. They have not been able to attract and retain highly skilled employees because of poor HR and Administration. There is no formal HR department or HR systems in place. Gavin has taken on the role as HR and Administration Manager but he lacks the competencies required. He believes it will be too costly to hire an HR manager and furthermore any one can "hire and fire" employees. They have one metal filing cabinet where employee's files are stored; there is no formal recruitment, selection, orientation or training programme; and no job description and specification. The new employees learn as they go along by watching the seasoned employees.
