In a Module 11 lecture, we learned about the Big Spring Run restoration project in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. There, legacy sediment associated with land clearing and dam construction in the 18th-19th centuries was manually excavated from the valley in an attempt to recreate the habitat conditions that existed prior to EuroAmerican settlement. This approach to restoration is more expensive, but is warranted in some situations.
