EMPLOYEE PARTICIPATION: In 1985, when the first edition of this text was published, employee participation in corporate decision making was a mere blip on the radar screen of Americas corporate managers. Management theorists sometimes advised involving employees in decisions, but it was advice that was seldom heeded. In the intervening thirty years, the number of employee participation programs has expanded geometrically. One study, by the federal Commission on the Future of Worker-Management Relations (commonly known as the Dunlop Commission), reported that even as early as 1994, perhaps up to 60% of American workplaces had some form of employee participation system. That same commission called for expansion of participation programs to cover more workers and more workplaces.The Dunlop Commission and many labor relations experts suggest that increasing the competitiveness of American industry will require abandoning the traditional adversarial approach to labor relations in favor of a more cooperative style of management. If that suggestion is heeded, as it appears increasingly to be, participation programs will proliferate throughout the workplace.
