In order to truly understand technology and its implications, it is essential that it be placed in the proper context. Furthermore, the pace of technological change is so rapid that what was true yesterday may no longer be valid. As a result, we must be continuously aware of what has happened, and where a technology may be heading.

Task: This assignment, you will collaborate with an Al to write an essay. Choose an issue related to the class that appeals to you (e.g., can computers be conscious) but I would like to do about Can AI be conscious or Can AI think like humans? or Can AI actually be sentient? or any issue now day that relates to AI and research it so that you will be able to incorporate others' ideas with your own. You must have a minimum of five sources (that are provided by you), which can cover a variety of aspects of your topic (e.g., its history, different viewpoints, etc.). Then using examples from any or all of the literary texts discussed, develop an argumentative essay that incorporates your research material. To accomplish this:

  1. Interact with ChatGPT or Bing to produce a final essay (follow the Sample Submission Document).
  2. Read the responses that that the Al returns carefully. Approach its output with an open mind but also with some skepticism. Do not assume that the Al knows all of the facts or how to put them together coherently or that it can provide adequate insight about the topic. Do not assume that confident answers are correct.
  3. Remember, it is your job to help the Al to improve the essay. Keep prompting the Al to provide it with advice on how to correct and improve the essay. You must submit the following (follow the Sample Submission document):
  • Your initial prompt and the Al's initial response.
  • At each step of your interaction with the Al, a summary of the output, your subsequent prompt, and the rationale for the prompt.
  • The final essay with parenthetical sources and a Works Cited (both in MLA)

NOTE: The initial essay that is generated will unlikely meet the word requirement. One of your challenges is to produce a coherent essay of the required length.

NOTE: The final essay must be formatted properly.

Length of the final essay: 1250 - 1500 w. (5

- 6 pg.)

Length of your own writing (all prompts, summaries, and rationale): 750+ w.

NOTE: SINCE LITERARY TEXTS ARE FICTIONAL AND DO NOT NECESSARILY PORTRAY REALITY ACCURATELY, LITERARY WORKS ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE SOURCE MATERIAL.

NOTE: SINCE DICTIONARY DEFINITIONS OF WORDS ARE "COMMON KNOWLEDGE" AND COMPILED QUOTATIONS (I.E., THOSE FOUND ON WEBSITES OR IN BOOKS) ARE NOT SUBSTANTIVE AND GENERALLY LACK CONTEXT, THESE ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE SOURCE MATERIAL.

Note: The Al tool will not help you to produce an assignment that meets the word requirement. You will need to employ different strategies to produce an essay that meets the word requirements.

Grading Emphasis: developing an effective subject; writing for appropriate occasion and audience; expressing ideas; spelling; critical analysis; sentence variety; consistent agreement; elimination of non-rhetorical fragments; effective ordering of ideas; punctuation (period, question and exclamation marks, colon, dash, ellipses, parentheses, brackets, commas); formatting; elimination of second person; adoption of formal conventions (i.e., no contractions, using "one" and "we" rather than "I" or "you"); including citations

NOTE: In answer to this exercise, you'll be looking for process and final output. The process (suggestions for improvement) should reveal an intentional revision of earlier Al essays, self-directed addition of facts and insights, quotes that illustrate ideas, and the addition of nuance to the initial essay. You are looking for advice and direction that highlights a revision of ideas (and facts if necessary); the addition of insight, examples, details; the subtraction of misconceptions, wrong information, inaccuracies, or misleading statements and directions that make the argument more convincing.

In terms of final output, you're looking for a final essay in which a concept is described accurately and thoughtfully; connections are made between different aspects of a concept, and in which there is evidence for points made. The final essay should respond to the prompt accurately, broadly, and deeply and provide insight into the topic.
