In our class, we discussed a research article about Organization-Enterprise System Fit/Misfits. It proposes that there are six aspects about potential misfits between enterprise systems and organizations. These are usability, functionality, data, control, role and organizational culture. We discussed quite a few scenarios to demonstrate misfit. The following is an example:
As we know that maintaining master data (such as product and customer data) is critical for smooth business operations. Before the implementation of ERP system, the company under investigation in the research has multiple groups being able to maintain the master data. For example, sales group could add new customers themselves. However, after the implementation of the ERP system, this job (of maintaining the master data) is centralized in a single group. As a result, individuals needing new parts or customers entered were often stopped from completing their tasks as they waited for someone in that group to do the data entry. Further, those responsible for entering master data in the group may also be overwhelmed with data entry jobs. In addition, because that single group were often no longer close to the tasks where the data were used, they may not have a good sense of the data and could not easily spot errors
It is clear that the enterprise system has a misfit with the organization. Please indicate which of the following aspect best represents the misfit.
Usability
Functionality
Data
Role
Organizational Culture
