In responding, comment on the decision-making challenges that they encountered. What could they have done differently and/or more effectively?
The decision that I made back in 2021 was a debate between myself about whether I should move back home after being away from my family for more than 20 years while giving up a secure government job that I worked my butt off to get. I left for the military at 18 and stayed away my entire adult life. (Family Drama will not get into) As I aged and forgave my family for how I was treated; I was asked to come back home given that COVID was happening and everything seemed a hot mess. I took months trying to decide if I should move back, sell my house, and leave a steady job that I worked hard to get. I used the Intuitive decision-making model. "It refers to arriving at decisions without conscious reasoning," and "Once a pattern is recognized, they can play a potential course of action through to its outcome based on their prior experience. Due to training, experience, and knowledge, these decision-makers have an idea of how well a given solution may work." (Carpenter,2013)
I used the intuitive model because of my entire life experience and history with my family. I pretty much used my "gut" to tell me what to do. I was told and promised that things had changed over the years, people were different and to come home. Then I decided to move back, to make a long story short after several months' things went south as they always did and I was mad at myself for coming back, leaving a great job, and having to potentially be on the streets. The two challenges I faced with my decision-making challenges were bias and uncertainty. Bias contributed to my outcome to leave home again because I already had past experiences and assumed how it would turn out. The second challenge was uncertainty because the entire decision-making process left me uncertain about how my future and life would be given the history of the family.
After a year of hiccups and struggles the silver lining appeared and I was able to find a better job with another government agency. I moved to cross country and now almost two years later, I'm in an amazing job that I love. Was it worth it to go through the heartache of my family drama? I'm a firm believer that all things happen for a reason.
