In response to concerns about false speech being made against important industries, the provincial government enacted the "Public Truth Act" $($PTA$).$ This provincial legislation is to regulate protests and public gatherings. The PTA includes these key provisions:

Section $1$: Prohibits gatherings promoting false speech, as defined by the provincial government, and empowers the police to disband any assembly deemed by the government to be false speech.

Section $2$: Makes it a criminal offence to organize a protest or public gathering that the government has declared is false speech.

The TruthTellers Association $($TT$)$ organized a peaceful protest against a controversial logging company based on what TT considers to be an environmental disaster. The government declared it was a false speech protest because the logging company had proved to the government that they would be planting trees after logging$,$ and there would be no environmental risk.

Two members of TT were arrested during the peaceful protest and are facing criminal charges.

Afterwards, the TT members held a private meeting and decided to launch a boycott against all businesses dealing with the logging company and an advertising campaign on social media blaming the logging company for forest degradation. They decided to launch these campaigns to financially ruin the logging company so that it would go out of business.

The Chairman of TT told a Toronto Star reporter that the logging company had a history of ignoring environmental regulations and was operated without regard to the forest. The reporter published these allegations in its newspaper as though they had been proved true and without asking the logging company to comment or to respond to the allegations before publishing. TT cannot now prove that the logging company ignores environmental laws.
